British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
