The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
